We had a feeling tonight's Google event is not just about the release of its two flagship phones. Variety reports, the hardware event will see the launch of the Daydream virtual reality headset for a price of $79 (roughly Rs 5200).
The Daydream platform and the VR headset was first teased in May in Google's I/O developer conference. The platform is the virtual reality extension of Android which Daydream-optimized phones can automatically switch to when combined with the Daydream VR headset. It works similar to Samsung's Gear VR headset.
Also like the Gear VR headset, the Daydream headset uses the phone's screen to project VR imagery, but unlike Samsung that uses a touch pad to navigate around, the Daydream VR headset will ship with a Wii-like remote that can track motion and can be used for both navigation and gaming in a VR environment.
Along with the Daydream compatible Pixel phones, HTC is also making the Daydream VR headset, Variety reports.
The Daydream VR headset comes just in time for the festive season. Where headsets like HTC's Vive and Oculus Rift come at a premium price of $6000-$8000, Google's paltry price-tag of $79 is surely going to make a dent in other's markets.
But with the lower price-tag, the Daydream VR headset, much like the Gear VR will not offer positional tracking like the higher-end devices do.
