Charlie Brooker and all Black Mirror fans sit up and take note. Sony has patented a contact lens that can record what you see at the blink of an eye.

Per a CNET report, Sony has patented a contact lens that instead of improving vision or featuring a HUD with augmented reality, can take videos of what you see.

Video in a blink of an eye

The patent awarded to Sony last April outlines a contact lens that is controlled by a user’s voluntary blinks, based on which it records videos.

The contact lens has sensors embedded in it that can differentiate between an involuntary blink and a deliberate blink.

The patent also talks about the image capture and storage mechanisms that wFebruaryill be embedded in the contact lens around the iris. Piezoelectric sensors will be able to convert eye movements into energy that will power the lens.

Practical application is far off

While the tech on paper is feasible, it’s still a long way off to see actual application of the technology for consumers. It is only theoretical so far. However, with Google already gunning for a contact lens camera, Moore’s law might catch up and make the device a real possibility sooner rather than later.
