Fake news inquiry: Facebook should verify stories

It is one of the measures MPs will consider as part of an inquiry into the spread of fake news on the internet which is being launched on Monday.

Damian Collins said the big social media platforms had to start taking responsibility for the proliferation of stories that are not true.

The Tory MP suggested the Government could also ask Facebook to investigate where fake news is coming from, seek out the locations of fake news firms and the servers they are using.

Speaking to Sky News, Mr Collins highlighted the scale of the problem saying that in the last three months of the US election campaign the top fake news stories had more shares than top legitimate stories.

Mr Collins made clear it was the big media firms and social media platforms he expected to take action.

He said: "In Germany where they have an election coming up, the German government has asked Facebook to look at the way that news is shared on Facebook because it is so concerned."

Mr Collins added he would like to see "verification tags" on sources of news on Facebook so people will know the stories are coming from a trusted source.

He said: "Just as major tech companies have accepted they have a social responsibility to combat piracy online and the illegal sharing of content, they also need to help address the spreading of fake news on social media platforms."

There was also a need to educate people in how to spot fake news to help them check the veracity of a story before sharing it with others, he added.

As part of the inquiry by the Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee, MPs will look at the impact fake news stories have had on specifics events, such as the EU referendum.

Some of the top fake news stories of the last year included the Queen threatening to abdicate if Britain voted to leave the EU and the Pope endorsing Donald Trump for President.

Children's entertainer Dave Benson Phillips told Sky News how a fake news report he had died in a car crash had a major impact on his life.

He said he hoped the inquiry would result in strong measures to stop the scourge of fake news.

Benson Phillips, star of Get Your Own Back, said: "A lot of people took it on face value that I had in fact been killed in a car crash.

"We hadn't really recognised how big the impact was going to be until we found ourselves going to theatres who said 'we've re-booked your show because we thought you were dead'.

"Without sounding too emotional about it, it affected me a lot.

"The person who it affected the most was my mum. She found out the news from a work colleague and was very upset."

Cannibal hamsters eat their babies due to corn diet in France

The rodents have in the past fed on a rich variety of grains, roots and insects.

But due to changing farming practices with an emphasis on industrially grown maize or corn, their diet is limited and imbalanced.

They are missing out on important vitamins like B3, or niacin, their habitat is "collapsing" and they are being turned into cannibals, believe experts.

The European hamster, also known as Cricetus cricetus, is critically endangered in western Europe.

Scientists carried out laboratory tests on the animals, with some mothers living on wheat and corn-based diets as well as clover or worms, and others who just had corn.

About 80% of the babies whose mothers had a varied diet were weaned - but only 5% of the offspring of the females fed corn made it to that stage - with the rest eaten.

The scientists said: "Females stored their pups with their hoards of maize before eating them. Pups were still alive at that time."

The mothers also ran around in circles, "climbing and pounding their feeders," when scientists entered the room.

The rodents had swollen and dark tongues, and blood so thick it was difficult to draw for samples, it was recorded.

However, when the hamsters were given the vitamin B3 in their corn diets, their symptoms disappeared and they stopped eating their young.

Vitamin B3 deficiency has been linked to 'black-tongue' syndrome in dogs, and a condition in humans called pellagra, also known as the "3-D" disease: diarrhoea, dementia and dermatitis, such as eczema.

"Improperly cooked maize-based diets have been associated with higher rates of homicide, suicide and cannibalism in humans," the researchers said.

Gerard Baumgart, president of the Research Centre for Environmental Protection in Alsace and a hamster expert, said: "There's clearly an imbalance. Our hamster habitat is collapsing."

He added: "Monoculture in agriculture is really bad for biodiversity. Now we need to take concrete action."

British astronaut Tim Peake to return to space on a second mission

He made the surprise announcement at the Science Museum on Thursday as the spacecraft that transported him to the International Space Station and back last year went on display at the London attraction.

Major Peake told Sky News he was "hugely excited" about returning to space.

"It's what every astronaut wants to do," he said.

"Myself and my classmates from 2009, we are all going to get the second mission to the space station, which is wonderful.

"The work that is being done on board the space station is incredibly important and also tremendously exciting as well.

"It is only natural to want to return. The one thing you miss is the view of planet Earth, of course. It is the most spectacular thing you can possibly see.

"But also being involved in the space programme is hugely rewarding."

The Science Museum tweeted: "Thrilling news that @astro_timpeake will return to space on a second @esa mission to the @Space_Station #Soyuz."

The Russian Soyuz space capsule is the first flown human spacecraft acquired by the museum for the UK's national space technology collection.

Standing next to the spacecraft which brought him back home after his first 115-day mission on board ISS, Major Peake added: "It is wonderful to see it ... still bearing the punishment scars of coming back to Earth through Earth's atmosphere.

"The last time I saw this was in Kazakhstan in June last year. It is wonderful to have this here in London."

In an interview with Sky News at the time, he said he would return to the ISS "in a heartbeat".

Asked by Sky's Harriet Hadfield at the Science Museum when stargazers could look forward to seeing him return to space, he replied: "That time will have to be decided by the European Space Agency."

Moody and neurotic? It could be down to your brain shape

A team at Cambridge University studied brain imaging from 507 people to try and link the shape of our brains with five key personality traits.

The team concluded that the outer layer of the brain - similar to the skin of an apple - is thicker and the brain less folded in neurotic people who are prone to mood changes and psychiatric disorders.

Individuals with 'open' personalities linked to curiosity and creativity show the opposite. The outer layer of their brains is thinner and the brain more folded in certain regions, with a greater surface area.

Researcher Dr Luca Passamonti says that long-term applications could include early diagnosis of severe anxiety and other psychiatric disorders.

He says the research shows evidence of a compromise within the human brain.

Dr Passamonti and others have identified the connections between brain shape and personality. Pic: Cambridge Independent
Image Caption: Dr Passamonti and others have identified the connections between brain shape and personality. Pic: Cambridge Independent

"Evolution has shaped our brain anatomy in a way that maximises its area and folding at the expense of reduced thickness of the cortex," he said.

"It's like stretching and folding a rubber sheet - this increases the surface area, but at the same time the sheet itself becomes thinner."

This stretching has allowed the human brain to expand rapidly without becoming too big for our skulls. It continues throughout our lives.

Psychologists break down human personality into five traits: neuroticism; openness; extraversion/enthusiasm; agreeableness (a measure of altruism); and conscientiousness (a measure of self-control).

The Cambridge researchers say that as we get older neuroticism decreases and we become better at handling emotions.

Meanwhile, the traits of conscientiousness and agreeableness grow more pronounced with age. As a result, people tend to become more responsible and less antagonistic as they get older.

Neuroscientist and MIT lecturer Dr Tara Swart says the new Cambridge research bolsters earlier evidence that the right sort of brain 'training' creates a measurable, physical benefit in the human brain.

Neuroscientist Dr Tara Swart, speaking at London

"'Training' in this case means how we are brought up, educated, who we socialise with and also how much time we spend on mindfulness activities," she said.

"Mindfulness activities include yoga, 'mindful' walking, eating and quiet time in nature without digital devices. It's not just sitting cross legged and meditating.

"Studies have shown that just 12 minutes of mindfulness a day or 30 minutes of mindfulness three times a week leads to increased gyrification - in other words, more folds - in the pre-frontal cortex, enabling it to work better."

Apple Removes Its Activation Lock Checking Tool

Activation Lock

Apple has removed its tool that lets you check where an iPhone or iPad has an activation lock, the tool was previously on iCloud.com.

The Activation Lock Tool lets you check an iPhone, iPad or an iPod Touch using either the IMEI number or the serial number to see if the handset has an activation lock.

The tool was useful if you were buying a pre-owned iPhone or iPad from sites like Ebay, and the feature is turned on automatically on devices when the Find My iPhone app is installed and setup.

As yet there are no details on why Apple may have removed the Activation Lock feature from their iCloud.com website, as soon as we get some more details, we will let you guys know.

Apple Activation Lock Website Removed Because It May Have Been Used In Hack

Activation Lock

Yesterday we heard that the Apple Activation Lock verification feature had been removed from Apple’s iCloud website.

The feature would allow you to enter a serial number or an IMEI number for an iPhone or iPad to see if it has an activation lock, this was useful to people buying pre-owned devices to see if they would be able to use the device.

Activation Lock is automatically turned on when you install Find My iPhone and a device cannot be registered and activated to a new user with this lock on.

Now it would appear that the reason that Apple has removed this feature from their website is because it may have been used in a hack to unlock bricked devices, this can be seen in the video below, the activation lock part is at around 5.25.

So it would appear that this may have been the reason that Apple decided to remove this tool from their website.

Oh Yes, Apple Just Filed a Patent for a Sick Vape

Oh Yes, Apple Just Filed a Patent for a Sick Vape
apple Image Credit
Continue reading

Apple has patented some weird stuff in the past year-remember Bag , the  foldable phone , and the  phone that's all screen ? Yet its latest application puts even those strange ideas to shame. Get ready, Congressman Duncan Hunter : Apple just filed a patent for a vaporizer.

The patent , filed in July and published yesterday, describes a "sublimator/vaporizer," and was first noticed by Digital Trends . It carries both Apple's name and that of company engineer and senior manager Tetsuya Ishikawa. Ishikawa has a history of filing patents related to heat creation and management, so a chamber for vaping as-yet-unknown materials seems right up his alley.

The patent documents describe a chamber that uses a heated plate to slowly compact the material being vaporized. This could potentially solve a problem with the bowls of many popular vapes today: If your bowl is packed incorrectly, you wind up with uneven heating and a lot of wasted, unvaped material that necessitates a quick stir midway through a smoke session.

It's not clear from the filing what substance is actually intended to be vaporized in the device. (It could, for example, be used in certain industrial and medical settings.) At the moment, however, the most common vaporizers in Apple's wheelhouse-the consumer electronic market-are recreational vapes, and the substance often used in a recreational vape is weed .

While we have no idea what Apple intends to do with its vaporizer-and it's well worth noting that this is just a patent, and may never see the light of day-California, where the documents were filed, legalized recreational marijuana use last year. There is, at least, some history, at least, with other kinds of vapes: Vape company Firefly was developed in part by a former Apple employee .

We've reached out to Apple to ask what they have in mind for the vape, and we'll update if we get a response.

Lost Japanese Spacecraft Has Made a Key Measurement on Rosetta's Comet

Japan's Proximate Object Close Flyby with Optical Navigation (PROCYON) has been lost in space ever since its ion thrusters blew out in 2014. Since then, the tiny spacecraft has done its best to be useful, orbiting the Sun by itself. A new study reveals the PROCYON made some impressive observations on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, the same comet the Rosetta spacecraft observed for two years before ending its mission in 2016.

In September 2015, an international team of researchers used PROCYON's LAICA telescope to observe Comet 67P while Rosetta was still inside the cloud surrounding the nucleus of the comet, called the coma . The micro spacecraft happened to be in the right place at the right time-though the researchers weren't planning to use PROCYON to observe Comet 67P, at the time, it had a better view of the comet than Rosetta. For this reason, it was able to accurately measure the amount of water discharge on the comet. The researchers' findings have been published in the February 2017 edition of The Astronomical Journal .

"The water production rate of a comet is one of the fundamental parameters necessary to understand cometary activity when a comet approaches the Sun ...because water is the most abundant icy material in the cometary nucleus," researchers wrote .

By studying the quality and quantity of water on comets , we might better understand the origins of water on Earth. It's long been hypothesized that a barrage of meteorites crashing into Earth could be responsible for some of the water on our Blue Marble. More generally, studying the activity on the surface of comets can shed light on how these mysterious balls of ice and rock have evolved over the history of the solar system.

The team was able to take its measurements and use them test out water production rates on a coma model , which allowed them to confirm an intriguing relationship: the closer an object is to the Sun, the higher its water production rate.

It's a big achievement for a wayward spacecraft. According to the research team , these measurements mark the "first scientific achievement by a micro spacecraft for deep space exploration." Because micro spacecrafts are remarkably cheaper than their larger siblings, the team hopes this feat will be a "model case" to inspire more micro spacecraft missions.

The FBI's Colossal Failure Investigating GamerGate

I hope Franz Kafka brought a change of underwear. (Image: FBI)

A member of Reddit GamerGate hub KotakuinAction filed a Freedom of Information Act request for documents pertaining to the FBI's investigation of the online movement which they received last month . Now those documents have been made public , and amid its 173 heavily-redacted pages is one email chain encapsulating how a year of the Bureau's efforts resulted in exactly zero prosecutions.

The initial complaint in the email thread titled "we need an update on our case" was filed by a woman in Massachusetts-game developer and Congressional hopeful Brianna Wu, according to a statement obtained by The Verge, who was doxxed, threatened, and sent photos of mutilated dogs by those within the movement. The thread begins with an email on May 22, 2015. Though nearly all of the message has been redacted, four sentences remain.

Agent [Redacted]

We feel like we are sending endless emails into the void with you.

I am CCing both the federal prosecutor and the Ohio district attorney on this email. Please help us. If you are serious about pursuing these cases, our family deserves to know.

The FBI appeared to find a lead on a bomb threat and interviewed the suspect who admitted he had, "called her at least 40- 50 times with threats." Though the suspect claimed to have "never made any bomb threats" he thought it credible that "someone else in the chat group could have done it."

At the end of the interview the suspect "apologized for this incident," mirroring a later interview with another suspect who "understood that it was a federal crime to send a threatening communication to anyone and will never do it again." Less than slap on the wrist.

The second suspect did, however, reveal GamerGaters to be pretty much who you'd expect them to be: He "considered himself to be a 'tech guy'... often plays video games... [and] lives with his parents."

Image: FBI describing 4chan as a "chat room"

It's not clear what "group chat" the first suspect is talking about, although the document refers to the imageboard 4chan in similar terms. Horrifying levels of internet ignorance are revealed by the document. For example it calls 4chan a "chat room"; refers to Twitter as "Tweeter" and the Tor browser and "Thor"; failing to ascertain a suspect's IP address due to basic countermeasures like proxies. Between several credibly-worded bomb and shooting threats is a letter obviously penned by a troll claiming there are "over 9000 bombs that we will use to blow up the [Taggert Student Center]," making use of an old Dragon Ball Z -based meme .

Image: FBI This is a real thing that happened, I guess.

At its most extreme, the FBI's utter misunderstanding of trolling and internet culture led an agent to ask an apparently innocent suspect "if anyone had ever called him a 'Glorious Winged Faggot Extraordinaite.'"

Internal communications within the email thread also call into question how organized the investigation was. It appears, from the snippet above, that in the year-long search for a "prosecutable federal case" involving the FBI, Homeland Security, and local law enforcement, clear communication was an ongoing issue. Other internal emails show that evidence wasn't being sent in a timely manner and phone interviews with suspects may have been lost.

To its credit, the FBI was able to determine that much of the doxxing associated with GamerGate was taking place on 8chan 's /baphomet/ board. However, the board still exists to this day, hosting the personal information of dozens of individuals and encouraging their harassment.

Image: FBI Good job, Twitter.

Blame rests as much on internet platforms for doing as little as humanly possible to prevent the targeted harassment of individuals during and since GamerGate . But the FBI's unwillingness to charge a single person as a result of its investigation, despite evidence that at least two people had committed federal crimes, should make us question the efficacy of our law enforcement protocols in a time when many of us live much of our lives online.

Mark Zuckerberg Decides He Won't Sue Hundreds of Hawaiians to Secure His Property

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has decided to backtrack on his decision to sue hundreds of native Hawaiians, which would have likely forced the families to sell their land at a public court auction to the highest bidder.

The lawsuits, which were filed back in December, targeted hundreds of native Hawaiians, some of whom were dead. In an open letter published in a local Hawaiian newspaper today, however, Zuck declared that he's nixing the legal maneuver.

"Upon reflection, I regret that I did not take the time to fully understand the quiet title process and its history before we moved ahead," Zuckerberg wrote . "Now that I understand the issues better, it's clear we made a mistake." It's quite a different tone from a Facebook post he wrote last week , in which he complained about the "misleading stories about our plans in Hawaii."

The story starts back in 2014, when Zuck dropped $100 million to acquire 700 acres of beachfront land on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. But as it turned out, several pieces of the land within those 700 acres were actually what's known as "kuleana lands." These small parcels are passed down though generations, sometimes without a written will or deed. So, Zuck, the sixth richest person in the world, launched a series of quiet title and partition lawsuits to identify some of the land owners, which were ultimately aimed at forcing the owners to sell their land.

These lawsuits are common in Hawaii, especially because it's difficult to determine who might own a small portion of land. However, the reaction to Zuck in particular wasn't overly positive-hundreds of Hawaiians are reportedly planning to protest in front the six-foot wall he built on the land.

From Business Insider:

"People are furious down here with him," said Hart, a hibiscus farmer who lives about a quarter-mile from one edge of Zuckerberg's roughly 700-acre property. Hart is encouraging people who attend the march to blow conch shells and bang drums in peaceful protest.

[...]

Neighbors of Zuckerberg like Hart have said the Facebook CEO's security team has used intimidation tactics to keep them off the public beaches and trails that intertwine with Zuckerberg's mostly undeveloped property.

Hart said he was recently confronted by security guards while walking along a public beach adjacent to Zuckerberg's property.

"We were walking along and they tried to say that this was private," he said. "I've been walking on this since I was a little kid."

It's unclear whether the protests will still happen, given that Zuck is now walking back on the lawsuits. It's also unclear how, exactly, he plans to move forward with the land, but he noted he's going to try his darndest.

"The right path is to sit down and discuss how to best move forward. We will continue to speak with community leaders that represent different groups, including native Hawaiians and environmentalists, to find the best path," he wrote in the open letter.

A Freak Mumps Outbreak Strikes Washington State

A Freak Mumps Outbreak Strikes Washington State

A mumps outbreak in Washington has health officials concerned over how to keep the disease contained. The state reported on Wednesday that there have been 278 confirmed and probable cases of mumps across five different counties since October. Now, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is getting involved to help fight the spread of the contagious disease.

The outbreak is primarily affecting the Washington counties of King, Pierce, Snohomish, Spokane, and Yakima. "Our outbreak has largely been connected to schools and people in contact with schools and schoolchildren," said Washington State Department of Health spokesperson Dave Johnson in an email to Gizmodo. "Most cases of mumps in Washington since this outbreak began have been in school-age children."

Image: Washington State Department of Health

Nationally, incidence of mumps has declined dramatically since the introduction of the US mumps vaccination program in the 1960s-before vaccines , there were about 186,000 cases of mumps reported each year, according to the CDC . In more recent history, the number of annual cases reported is typically well below 1,000 nationwide.

But a few times in the past decade, there's been a significant uptick in the annual number of mumps cases. For example, in 2006 the CDC reported more than 6,500 cases of mumps, which predominantly affected college-age students living in the midwest. In 2016, there were more than 5,000 reported cases nationally.

The cause of the recent uptick remains unclear, although a 2010 study published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases cites a few possible factors, including changes in the efficacy of vaccines over time in populations, high population density in communal living situations, and individual immunity waning over time, even in people who have received the normal two doses of the MMR vaccine during childhood.

Last month, the CDC reported that most individual state outbreaks of mumps have been occurring among vaccinated people, suggesting that a third booster of the vaccine might be needed. Another possibility is that not enough people are being vaccinated to maintain so-called herd immunity .

"The MMR vaccine is not perfect, but it is the best protection we have against mumps," Johnson said. "Two doses gives lifelong protection against mumps to 88 percent, or about 9 out of 10 people."

"This means about 12 out of every 100 vaccinated people are still vulnerable to mumps, especially if they have prolonged, close exposure to someone who is contagious," he added. "That's why it's important for everyone to get the vaccine, to protect people for whom the vaccine might not work, and those who can't be vaccinated."

As with other diseases that were once nearly eradicated by vaccines, the resurgence in mumps coincides with the birth of the anti-vaxxer movement. Unfortunately, that movement seems poised to live on under President Trump, who has tweeted about how vaccines may lead to autism, an idea that stems from a widely debunked, now-retraced study. There is ample evidence that vaccines do not cause autism, including a 2015 study of more than 95,000 children that found no association between the MMR vaccine and increased risk of autism.

Whether or not Trump uses his position to stoke the flames of the anti-vaxxer movement, as some fear he will , the best way to combat the spread of mumps is to keep yourself and your children up on your vaccines . At the present, the CDC recommends that children get their first MMR vaccine at 12 to 15 months of age, and again at age 4 to 6. Parents and doctors should watch out for symptoms, which include swollen salivary glands under the ears on one or both sides, fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, and loss of appetite.

These symptoms typically appear about about 16 days after infection. Most people recover within a few weeks, though some can experience complications such as hearing loss and inflammation of the brain.

For now, Washington state is supplying the MMR vaccine to local health departments to ensure that there's enough for people who want (or need) it. The state is also working with local health departments to track how the outbreak is spreading.

"The MMR vaccine is our first line of defense," Johnson told Gizmodo in an email, "and we are working to be sure everyone knows they need the recommended doses of MMR vaccine."

City officials and the Secret Service have confirmed that just days before the presidential inauguration, police surveillance cameras in Washington, DC were targeted by hackers. Reportedly, 70 percent of the CCTV storage devices were infected with ransomware .

According to the Washington Post :

City officials said ransomware left police cameras unable to record between Jan. 12 and Jan. 15. The cyberattack affected 123 of 187 network video recorders in a closed-circuit TV system for public spaces across the city, the officials said late Friday.

Secret Service spokesman Brian Ebert said the safety of the public or protectees was never jeopardized.

Archana Vemulapalli, the city's Chief Technology Officer, said the city paid no ransom and resolved the problem by taking the devices offline, removing all software and restarting the system at each site.

Vemulapalli said that an investigation is ongoing and that it is not believed that other DC computer networks were compromised.

The fact that hackers used ransomware indicates that they were likely after money rather than access to the security system. Ransomware typically locks down a system, making it unusable, until a price is paid by the victim.

Officials say that four camera sites were noticed as being offline on January 12th. When the technology office investigated, two forms of ransomware were discovered and a system-wide inspection was initiated.

While the police department insists that there was "no significant impact" resulting from the 48-hour infection, limited details are given. They claim that the hack did not affect any criminal investigations. Officials declined to name a suspect.

Gizmodo has reached out to the DC police department to confirm whether or not they know how the initial infection occurred. We will update this post when we receive an answer.

All-Corn Diet Turns Hamsters Into Cannibals Who Eat Their Young

Researchers in France have discovered that a monotonous diet of corn causes hamsters to exhibit some unusual behavior-cannibalism.

A new paper outlines the efforts of scientists at the University of Strasbourg to determine why the European hamster (Cricetus cricetus) has been dying off at an alarming rate.

The hamster is critically endangered in western Europe and research into the cause seemed to hit a brick wall. At first, it was theorized that pesticides and industrial ploughing might be to blame. Perhaps the hamsters underground layers were being destroyed, leading to the population drop off. But that was determined to not be the cause.

Researchers led by Mathilde Tissier decided to look into the hamster's diet. Previously, the rodent's diet consisted of grains, roots and insects. But the regions in which it's numbers were dropping have been taken over by the industrial farming of corn.

The Guardian explains how tests were carried out:

A first set of lab experiments with wild specimens compared wheat and corn-based diets, with side dishes of clover or worms. There was virtually no difference in the number of pups born, or the basic nutritional value of the different menus. But when it came to survival rates, the difference was dramatic.

About four-fifths of the pups born of mothers feasting on wheat-and-clover or wheat-and-worms were weaned. Only 5%, however, of the baby hamsters whose mothers ate corn instead of wheat made it that far. What was most disturbing is how they perished.

The horrific results found that mothers were kept their pups with their stash of maize and eventually ate them alive. They also developed "black-tongues" and began acting erratically, "climbing and pounding their feeders."

"Improperly cooked maize-based diets have been associated with higher rates of homicide, suicide and cannibalism in humans," the researchers pointed out. A deficiency of the vitamin B3 has been traced to a condition called pellagra. It's believed that three million people died from pellagra between 1735 and 1940.

So, the scientists decided to test out hamster subjects with a purely maize-based diet but added B3 for some. Suddenly the hamsters being given additional vitamins started doing normal hamster activities instead of devouring their offspring like maniacs.

While the European hamster is considered a pest by farmers maintaining bio-diversity is important to the ecosystem and in France it's important to the law. The European Union's highest court, ruled in 2011 that the country must adjust policies to protest the hamster or face fines up to $24.6 million. According to the researchers, it's clear that the best policy to fix this situation is a concerted effort "to restore a diverse range of plants in agriculture schemes." Hopefully, freakin' cannibalism as a symptom will be enough to cause action on the problem.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 review: The heir apparent

Xiaomi RedmiNote 4 review: The heir apparent

A couple of years ago, my headline for the review of the Xiaomi Redmi 2 read ‘ the return of the king' on a website not far away from here. It says something about how good a product Xiaomi makes. Then in 2016 came along the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 which took the Indian market by storm. Xiaomi says that it sold 3.6 million of these phones in India alone and its revenues in India crossed the $1 billion mark while its sales in China have petered along and it has failed to meet its targets two years in a row. Business aside, the Redmi Note 3 was a disruptive phone for its price and in my review, I called it the ‘Rahul Dravid of smartphones '. In many ways, the Redmi Note 4 is the heir apparent. Now, Xiaomi doesn't have it as easy as it had things last year because the competition has woken up. But despite all this, the Redmi Note 4 is one hell of a phone and easily the best smartphone that you'll get for less than Rs 15,000.

The Good

From the get-go, it can be argued that every aspect of the Redmi Note 3 has been improved. Yes, this is an iterative update, but a sweeping update which means each every frailty of the phone has been addressed and the end result is fewer compromises and a more holistic premium smartphone experience for a sliver of the cost.

The biggest update comes in the form of the rear camera. It is a massive upgrade coming from the Redmi Note 3. Yes, it has a 13-megapixel resolution sensor with a f/2.0 aperture and PDAF system, but the image quality is a world apart.

The image quality is superb and it is actually quite close to something like the OnePlus 3 and on par with the Moto G4 Plus. The Xiaomi folks told me, the benchmark for the camera was the iPhone 6 and boy they do come close.

You get perfectly balanced images from the Redmi Note 4 which have ample amounts of detail, natural colours and decent levels of saturation. In low-light too, the image quality is a big improvement and it is possible to capture usable shots. The problem is that when taking close up shots, I felt the focusing was difficult because you couldn't the phone very close to the subject, but other than that, this device has possibly the best camera for a phone which is priced at less than Rs 15,000.

Video performance of the phone has also improved by a good deal, and it is possible to take some nice videos with this phone. The 5-megapixel camera also takes some good videos and selfies which are another improvement in the kitty of the Note 4. This could be due to new hardware or better software, but seriously who cares as long as it is better.

This time around Xiaomi is using a 2.5 curved cover glass for the Redmi Note 4's display. It still has a 5.5-inch 1080p LCD display, but this too is an improvement over its predecessor. It has richer colours and an overall brighter screen; the curved glass is also a nice premium touch which enhances the feel of the screen. All in all, this is a great screen for watching video, reading text, playing games or even shooting images for that matter.

Xiaomi has also refined the design. While it still has a metal unibody design, the Redmi Note 4 certainly looks like a classier phone than its predecessor. The metal chamfers are subtle, yet visible, the phone is slimmer at 8.3mm and the curved glass on the front makes the phone look sexier. The back is also beveled in such a slight way that it fits snugly in the palm. The speaker grills have also been moved to the bottom end next to microUSB port which means that it is more audible and from a design perspective it looks cool. Overall, while the Redmi Note 3 was slightly boring to look at, the Note 4 is much more attractive.

But all these improvements aside, one of the bigger improvements come in the form of sustained performance. Compared to a phone like the OnePlus 3 side by side, I often found almost no perceptible difference in the performance of the Note 4. Xioami has outfitted the phone with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 eight-core processor coupled with 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage which makes this anyway a hell of a package but looks like Xiaomi has optimised the heck out of the package to eek every ounce of performance out it.

Similarly, if you talk about gaming, I ran games like Dead Trigger 2 and Asphalt 8 and the graphics were quite similar. Frame rate issues were also few and far between, and the heat management was never an issue. In fact, I don’t remember this phone heating up even once, even while charging which is quite incredible.

Talking of charging, the battery life, again was awesome and I constantly managed in excess of 40 hours out of this phone on a single charge. While it still isn't the fastest charging phone, Xiaomi has made sure that it charges faster than its predecessor.

As usual, the software on the Redmi Note 4 is Android 6.0 Marshmallow skinned with the Mi UI 8 which is one of the better Android skins around. It is quite straight-forward to use and is tooled like Apple's iOS which makes things simple for a lot of people.

The Bad

The bad isn’t bad per se, but it is more of a boring. The big takeaway is that this isn’t the incredibly disruptive smartphone that took the Indian market by storm last year. This time around it feels like a refinement of the same. Basically, Xiaomi set about to fix everything that wasn’t ideal with the Redmi Note 3.

By some metrics, this phone may also feel like a downgrade as it now uses the Snapdragon 625 instead of the Snapdragon 650 which is based on a superior architecture. Now, there are pros and cons, but Qualcomm promotes the 650 as a superior chip than the 625, but in real-world performance, I didn't face any issues. In fact, when augmented with 4GB RAM, I found the package on the Redmi Note 4 to be better, but the question is how many will feel the same way
.
Additionally, image quality in low-light is still not comparable to older Xiaomi phones like the Mi 4 and video in loud conditions isn’t very usable because of distorted audio.

The Redmi Note 4 is yet another case of a smartphone running a version of Android that’s more than a year old. In this case, the phone also doesn’t fully support Android Marshmallow functionality like Google now on tap.

Should you buy it?

Long story short. Yes. Yes and Yes. Buy the Redmi Note 4 because it is fast, reliable, affordable and while doing so it will give you a very good camera and battery life that's akin to a roadrunner. It is the ultimate refinement of the Redmi Note 3 which is high praise because that phone now is a bit of an icon - just like Rahul Dravid was for the Indian cricket team. While India hasn't found the ultimate heir to Dravid, it seems like Xiaomi has found the heir apparent. It is the Redmi Note 4.

The upcoming watchOS 3.2 update will come with the much-needed Theatre Mode for the Apple Watch . Apple 's Developer Guide details the feature saying that the Theater Mode, when enabled, will mute the sound and prevent the screen from waking up when you raise your wrist.

This will be helpful for those watching a movie in a theater and have the sense of not shoving their bright display on the faces of the rest of the audience.

You will still receive your notifications on your watch but through haptic feedback. You also view them by pressing on the digital crown or tapping on the screen as they arrive.

Despite Apple's best efforts to allow for a non-intruding theatre experience, the onus ultimately lies on the user to enable the feature and be less annoying.

In addition, Apple also added Sirikit support to watchOS 3.2 which will now allow third-party app makers to leverage Siri to launch the apps and operate them. For example, you can now hail and Uber or send a WhatsApp message using Siri directly through your Apple Watch.

Apple has not confirmed a release date for watchOS 3.2 either for developers or for consumers. The minor watchOS 3.1.3 update was released earlier this week.

Elon Musk Wants Your Help With Suggesting Immigration Changes to Trump

Elon Musk really wants to believe that he can work with Donald Trump . As a member of the new administration's economic advisory board, Musk thinks he has an inside track to be a good influence. And now he'd like your suggestions for amending the president's unlawful executive order on immigration .

Yesterday evening, Musk joined other tech executives in voicing his very softly worded opinions about the order on Twitter . "The blanket entry ban on citizens from certain primarily Muslim countries is not the best way to address the country's challenges," he wrote. See, it's not "the best" and he'd like to make it better. He followed that this afternoon by tweeting an open call to hit him up with suggestions:

This is great, Elon. We know that you're scheduled to meet with the president on Friday because your fellow adviser Travis Kalanick said that was the case in his statement , yesterday.

Elon linked to this paywalled Wall Street Journal breakdown of the ban, but you can read it here for free. It's a little on the long side and quite tedious to read. It codifies some entirely unnecessary things like, "It is the policy of the United States to protect its citizens from foreign nationals who intend to commit terrorist attacks in the United States." There are like 8 billion laws on the books that make it clear that the U.S. isn't especially fond of terrorists. But, thankfully, the BBC has bullet-ed out some key takeaways:

  • A suspension of the US Refugee Admissions Programme for 120 days
  • An indefinite ban on Syrian refugees
  • A 90-day suspension on anyone arriving from seven Muslim-majority countries - Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. Some visa categories, such as diplomats and the UN, are not included in the suspension
  • Priority will be given to religious minorities facing persecution in their countries. In an interview, Mr Trump singled out Christians in Syria
  • A cap of 50,000 refugees to be accepted in 2017, against a limit of 110,000 set by former President Barack Obama
  • A suspension of the Visa Interview Waiver Program, which allows consular officers to exempt some applicants from face-to-face interviews if they are seeking to renew their temporary visas within a year of expiry
  • Exceptions could be made on a case-by-case basis

It's well known that Trump doesn't like getting bogged down in details so if Elon really wants to get the commander-in-chiefs attention, we highly suggest keeping the proposed amendments simple. Just print this out and present it to him.

  • A suspension of the US Refugee Admissions Programme for 120 days
  • An indefinite ban on Syrian refugee s

It's very important that this be printed. Trump likes his info in hard copy format unless it's on Twitter. The subject line on the memo should look just like this: Protecting the Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into the United States. That'll take care of any particulars we've overlooked.

Those are our suggestions for tightening up this illegal violation of countless people's rights-make sure to send yours along . Keep it simple, even a well-played GIF could hold the answer to this complex problem.

How iOS 10.3 beta shows Apple’s increasing India focus

The last few quarters have made it quite clear that Apple needs to focus on India as its sales are slowing down in China and it has hit a plateau of sorts with the iPhone sales in developed markets like the US. In the last year or so, Apple has tried to court India which is poised to be the second largest smartphone market in the world after China. Its latest iOS 10.3 beta is the biggest tell-tale sign that the company realises this problem and it is moving towards fixing it.

One of the new features uncovered in the incoming update is the presence of cricket scores which are sourced from the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the India Premier League (IPL). India is a cricket crazy country and its team is one of the best in the world. BCCI , India’s governing body for cricket hosts the most lucrative T20 cricket league, which of course is the IPL .

The fact that now Apple users will able to summon Siri and get access to live cricket scores underlines that Apple is focussing on India. This is the first instance of Apple customising something on iOS for the Indian market. Earlier, Apple had added the SOS function in an iOS update, but that could be attributed to it being mandatory for phones sold in India.

Having live cricket scores on the iPhone isn’t something that mandatory. However, Apple is doing it.

With this Apple is following Google’s path which has recently started building products with India in mind and scaling them across the globe. “When you build for India, you build for the world,” said Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai recently on a trip to India.

Google, of course, has been providing live cricket scores in India for sometime and it has a strong marketing campaign on as well in India highlighting that its search app can deliver live cricket score’s to a users fingertips.

Other examples of India focus

Apple has been late to the party but now we can expect more of the same for India. It has now a facility in Hyderabad which focusses on the development of Apple Maps in India. It is hiring 4,000 map devs for the facility. One can expect a better Apple Maps experience in the coming months.

Similarly, it has an app development accelerator in Bangalore which may promote more Indian developed to makes apps for iOS, propelling innovation on the App store.

Apple has been customising Apple Music for India too. For India, it has a more affordable cost structure compared to other markets and it has tied up with many Indian artists for the same. This year at the Apple Music festival it collaborated with Sulaiman who has become an evangelist of the service. Similarly, it has been working with Bollywood actress Neha Dhupia for some playlists on the service which are around fitness.

For Apple TV, the Cupertino based company has tied up with local providers like HotStar and Eros Now too.

Challenges ahead

Of course, there are challenges for Apple in India. It still hasn’t been able to launch its iconic Apple stores which serve as temples for all things Apple. They are the physical presence of the brand and in India because single brand retail outlets demand 30 percent local sourcing Apple has been unable to launch these stores.

Even for manufacturing it isn’t getting concessions from the government which doesn’t want to be viewed as being favourable towards Apple.

Last year, even a plan to sell refurbished smartphones in India was squashed by the government which deemed these devices could increase e-waste in the country. If Apple was allowed to sell these refurbished iPhones, the average selling price of the iPhone would’ve come down in India.
